Quantum Dot - The Next Generation LCD

Quantum dot technology received major attention at SID Display week 2015 in June with the presence of major suppliers such as Nanosys and QD Vision. It also received strong mention during the Display week keynote session by TCL CEO, who viewed QLED as the next generation technology for display. Nanosys quantum dot enhancement films also received best in the show award in small exhibit category. AT CES last January, Quantum also received great attention with the new TV products from Samsung, TCL, and others that used the materials to show outstanding color gamut.

Display based on quantum dot materials has been introduced in the application market such as tablet, TV and others. Two of the big benefits of using this technology for displays are higher color gamut and lower power consumptions. Two of the main challenges this technology is facing currently in the display market are higher price and some concern about cadmium material’s environmental impact. Quantum dot material suppliers already started production of non-cadmium based materials, but performance is lower than the cad-based materials. Most of the suppliers expect the performance to increase over time. The allure of quantum dot is that it can be used with LED back light of the LCD TV or other products to increase color gamut or range of colors that one can see in the picture. This has helped to increase performance gap between LCD and OLED display.

Still there are doubts if Quantum dot can ever be a mainstream technology for display? With current price premium and cadmium issue there is concern that it may stay more in the high-end niche segment rather than penetrate the mainstream products.

LCD technology with all its dominance on majority of the consumer products, still aspires to match OLED in terms of performance especially wider color gamut, higher color contrast and darker black level. Quantum dot has enabled LCD technology to reduce the performance gap with OLED. Also LCD market demand is slowing down, but fab capacity is till increasing especially in China, creating long- term concerns.  LCD needs to reinvent itself to bring new features, and performance to the consumer market to spur replacement demands. Quantum dot technology in its evolutionary form, may be what LCD needs for next generation products to support its survival.

Here we can see the two images, one of them clear and other then little light. Its natural because this result about the two LCD display. HD LCD gives the more then clear result and gives shining of the picture.
